What You Should Know About Cremation Services

Choosing cremation services involves several important decisions, and planning ahead can help make the process less overwhelming for families. Before cremation takes place, families typically work with the funeral home or cemetery to complete the required paperwork, obtain permits, and discuss memorial preferences. It is also helpful to decide how you would like to honor your loved one afterward, whether through a memorial service, placement in a columbarium niche, burial of the cremated remains, or scattering in a designated area. Many families also choose an urn or memorial item in advance to reflect their loved one’s personality and wishes.

Families often appreciate knowing what to expect during the cremation process itself. Once all authorizations are completed, cremation is performed in a carefully controlled setting and may take several hours, depending on the individual and the type of container selected. After the process is complete, the cremated remains are prepared and returned to the family in an urn or temporary container. Cremation also allows flexibility when planning services, as families may choose to hold a traditional viewing or memorial gathering before or after cremation. At Greenlawn Memorial Park, families have several memorialization options available, including outdoor cremated remains burial, indoor columbarium placement, and scattering gardens.

Outdoor Cremated Remains Burial

For those seeking a tranquil, outdoor resting place, we offer special cremation ground burials. This option provides flexibility in memorialization while maintaining a peaceful environment for reflection.

Burying cremains in the ground in a family plot or a single, smaller space gives you more options. You can choose a complete cremation ground burial for $3,122.59* for one, or $4,405.18* for two people.

Indoor Cremation Columbarium

Place your loved one in a decorative, engraved urn behind a beautiful glass front niche. Various sizes are available. You and your family can decide what to put inside the niche along with the urn**. Flower vase is included.

We also have a community niche section in the columbarium. This burial service option is only $1,516.19 and comes complete with a personalized name plate.

Free Scattering Garden

We offer a serene scattering garden as a cost-conscious yet touching option. Surrounded by seasonally blooming flowers, this garden allows families to scatter ashes in a natural, peaceful setting.

There is an option for personalized inscription. Scattering is free after paying $361.50 for endowment care, recording and state fees.

Cremation Services FAQs

  • What is cremation?

Cremation is the process of reducing the body to cremated remains through the use of heat and a specialized cremation chamber. After cremation, the remains are typically placed in an urn or memorial container and may be buried, placed in a niche, scattered, or kept by the family.

  • How long does cremation take?

The cremation process itself generally takes a few hours, although the full timeline may vary depending on required paperwork, permits, and scheduling. Families should also allow additional time for preparing and returning the cremated remains.

  • Can I still have a wake with cremation?

Yes. Many families choose to have a wake, visitation, funeral service, or memorial gathering before cremation takes place. Others may hold a memorial service afterward with the urn present. Cremation offers flexibility for both traditional and personalized services.

  • How much does cremation cost?

Cremation costs can vary depending on the type of services selected, including memorial services, viewing options, urns, and final placement. In many cases, direct cremation may start around $1,000 to $3,000, while cremation with memorial, burial, or funeral services can cost more depending on the arrangements chosen. Families can work with us to discuss available options and pricing that fit their needs and preferences.

  • How long does it take to get the ashes back?

In many cases, families receive the cremated remains within several days after the cremation is completed. Timing can vary depending on processing requirements and the selected memorial arrangements.
